You know, it would be easier for me to believe this was a crisis, if the people in charge were acting like it was a crisis, instead of just an opportunity for graft.

The people who are in charge (Bush, Paulson and Bernanke) are acting like it is a crisis. Unfortunately, since it is a crisis, they have limited bargaining power. Chris Dodd and the Democratic party is exploiting this to line the pockets of their allies.
